FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering CIVE 420- Concrete I Fall 2003 Prof. M. Harajli Assignment VI The beam below is simply supported with a clear span of 7.5 m and is to carry a service uniform dead load of 0.8 T/m including its own weight, and a uniform live load of 1.6 T/m. The reinforcement consists of 3 bars T 32mm at a depth d = 40 cms. One of the bars is to be discontinued where it is no longer needed. Given: f’c = 280 kg/sq.cm, fy = 4200 kg/sq.cm. 1. Determine the location where the center bar can be discontinued. 2. Check to see if adequate development length is provided for the continued and the discontinued bars. 3. Check special requirements at the support. 4. If T10 bars are used as transverse reinforcement, specify special reinforcing details in the vicinity where the T 32 bar is cut-off. 5. Comment on the practical aspects of the proposed design. Would you recommend cutting the steel as suggested? Could two bars be discontinued rather than one?
