CIVILIZATION SEQUENCE 204
FINAL EXAMINATION
Time: Two Hours January 25, 2000
Ms. A. Dibo
Choose two of the following topics:
One: “Break down the stereotypes and reductive theories” E. Said.
How did Edward Said elaborate on this task of the intellectual?
How is this echoed in “Season of Migration to the North” by
Taveb Salih?
C.S. 204 seemed to be - according to your comments - most
relevant to your personal life to-day.
Choose only three basic issues (e.g. on survival, on being, on
freedom, on women’s condition, on man’s fate, on conflicts,
on identity) and show how any one author we read in C.S. 204
has enlightened you on the subject.
“Then my mind cleared and my relationship to the river was
determined. I thought that if I died at that moment, I would
have died as I was born without any volition of mine. Ail my
ife I had not chosen, had not decided. Now I am making a
decision. I choose life. I shall live because there are few people
I want to stay with for the longest possible time and because [
have duties to discharge. It is not my concern whether or not
ife has meanings. If I am unable to forgive, then I shall try to
forget.” Tayeb Salih.
How did the narrator come to this conclusion? (in the context
of the novel).
How do you compare this decision, with decisions taken bv a
main character from other works we have read in CS (either
Malraux, or Beckett, or Mahfouz).
How do you interpret this passage under a Freudian look?
GOODLUCK!
