Math 202 — Spring 2012 Differential Equations, sections 16–19 Professor: Kamal Khuri-Makdisi, Bliss 311, phone 4234. E-mail to kmakdisi@aub.edu.lb is usually the easiest way to contact me. My office hours will be announced shortly. Check out the course website frequently for announcements: http://people.aub.edu.lb/∼kmakdisi/ Class time: Large lectures, MWF 7:50, in Nicely 415. Mandatory recitation sections will be given by Mrs. Fatima Mrou´e (FM) and myself (KKM). The schedule is: section 16, M 12:00, Nicely 210 (KKM); section 17, T 3:30, Bliss 203 (FM); section 18, T 12:30, Nicely 210 (FM); section 19, T 5:00, Nicely 103 (FM). Make sure you know which section you are registered for. We reserve the option to give drop quizzes in section and the lecture if needed. Textbooks: [Z] D. Zill, A First Course in Differential Equations with Modeling Applications, 9th edition, and [TWH] Thomas/Weir/Hass, Thomas’ Calculus, 12th edition (same book as in Math 201, which is a prerequisite for 202). Course requirements: 1) two quizzes; 2) comprehensive final exam. The quizzes and final exam will be closed book, and calculators will NOT be allowed. Please make a note from now of the date and time of Quiz 1 and Quiz 2, as given below. Your grade will be determined by the BETTER of the following two options: a) 25% each quiz, 50% final, and b) 15% quiz 1, 20% quiz 2, 65% final. Option b) is mainly there to help students who have shown improvement during the semester. I will not give make-up quizzes. If you miss a quiz for a significant medical reason (with a note from the AUB infirmary ONLY) or other reason that I consider justified, I will determine an appropriate way of assigning the grade based on your remaining coursework. Syllabus and assigned exercises: University courses are different from school: for each hour you spend in class, you need to spend 2–3 hours on average studying at home or in the library. Carefully read and review the book and your notes before each class, and work through all the assigned exercises as a minimum.
